Mission:
Season 1 - Prologue
Location: Deck 8, Secondary Science Labs
Timeline: MD01
One of the secondary Science Labs on Deck 8 was undergoing a makeshift fit out in order to provide an appropriately secure storage space for the cargo that the Captain was bringing back from the surface. There had been little discussion about what the actual item was, all the crew had been told was it was very valuable and very very important.
Unfortunately for the engineering crew tasked with setting the lab up, the lack of information was less than helpful. Ensign Sumall, one of the few Tellarites onboard was leading the small team.
Sumall snarled as the console in front of him blacked out once again. A surefire sign that his patch into the ODN network had failed. In frustration he unclasped the breast of his uniform jacket, exposing the departmental coloured undershirt with a loud sigh, before the console magically came back to life.
"Aha!" he exclaimed triumphantly. His excitement was short lived. Within a few nano-seconds the console sounded a new alert, which wained as the power drained from it once again and it died.
His frustration tipped over into rage, and the Sumall threw his hands up into the air, swore loudly in native Tellarian and bashed the console with his fist.
Thoria had just finished up with Captain Winchester in the newly refurbished lounge, as she walked through the corridors to her next meeting her com badge began to bleep.
"zh'Kela here," She responded, still walking but at a slower pace now. "Sir there's a security alarm going off in science lab 8." the security officer said, unsure if she knew what he meant.
"Alright Fred," Thoria said "Show me en route," then she tapped the prototype design com badge and headed in that direction, this was common during refits but still needed to be checked up on.
Thoria entered the lab, and a Tellarite of average height stood at the console with his arms in the arm. "Attention!" She called out, when he turned around she noticed his rank and continued with "Ensign. Report." Thoria had her thoughts, but she didn't want to be prejudiced.
The team, many of them completely used to Sumall's Tellerite nature, had been continuing to work away during the tellerite's outburst were now standing at complete attention. Sumall quickly followed suit, albeit begrudgingly.
"Ma'am, we are installing the console to manage the variable gravity field in the secure chamber." Sumall gestured to a large transparent container. Its front opening measured 4ft by 4ft, and was a deep. It sat upon a slightly larger piece of apparatus that had a glossy glass surface that hid all the technical parts below.
Thoria quickly glanced at the console. "Really Ensgin?" She asked rhetorically "Because that console just triggered a security alert... And given you were clearly intent to destroy it, I am not surprised it did that. So please explain why you were about to dismantle it?" She was exhausted from calls like these, she just wanted to get underway already.
"That console triggered a security alert because the patch to the ODN didn't hold up - not because of actions. This was originally designed for a low security lab. The infrastructure was not meant to support consoles with this level of encryption hardwired into them." The tellarite grunted nonchalantly disregarding the Commander's comment on his action, as was common with his race.
"Regardless Ensign," Thoria continued. "We don't upgrade consoles by attacking them don't we?" She asked.
Sumaal was saved by the bell, as the ships PA system engaged, "Now hear this, Commander zh'Kela, Lt Commander Chura and Ensign Sumaal to Shuttlebay One. Captain returning."
The announcement piqued Thoria's interest. "Continue on," she called out. "Ensign, I want a debrief about this in my office at 20 hundred hours." Shen then turned around and exited the room, unaware that the tellarite she was speaking to was Ens SumaalI.
Sumaal looked slowly around the room at this colleagues, many of whom were as shocked as he was. He just shrugged and followed the Executive Officer out into the corridor, and towards the nearest Turbolift.
